Nearly one Shoreline home in four was built in the 1950s, and floors from that decade can include vinyl tile, black adhesive and sheet vinyl that contain asbestos. Every layer is sampled, and the flooring is lifted so the tile comes up in pieces instead of turning to dust.

Lifting a floor takes patience more than speed. Samples come before any prying. We work in Shoreline, Lake Forest Park and Edmonds.

How the work goes

Lifting tile whole

Square vinyl tiles are worked loose one at a time, so they come up as pieces and not as powder. Each goes straight into a container labeled as nonfriable asbestos waste.

Dealing with the glue

The black mastic is sampled by itself. If it is scraped dry or ground off the subfloor, it turns to dust, and the agency then treats it as friable under the full work rules.

Sheet vinyl with felt backing

Check the layer beneath the vinyl. When felt or paper backing powders under hand pressure, the agency calls it friable. A lab sample tells you which kind you have.

Floors on floors

Carpet over tile over another floor is possible in a house with several remodels behind it. Each layer the project will lift is sampled, and a layer that stays can be covered.

Planning the job

Floor work covers little area and asks a lot of questions.

The bare subfloor

With the tile and glue gone, you can finally judge the subfloor. Low spots, moisture and gouges get priced then, not guessed at beforehand.

What to avoid

Leave the sander, the grinder and the dry broom in the garage. Each one turns hard flooring into fine dust and triggers the stricter crumbly-material rules.

Waste

Waste goes to approved sites in labeled containers. The homepage FAQ lists them.
